Kinda disappointed by the new Takeshi Kitano Zatoichi movie after watching the R3 DVD. For me it just seemed sort of flat and forced. And I really didn’t like the cheap CGI animation effects, which didn’t mix at all well with the period feel of the rest of the movie. There just wasn’t enough of what makes Kitano’s best movies interesting. Here he seemed too stylistically restrained, almost like he was trying to make a more commercial movie, or at the least had lost some creative steam. The endless twists towards the end of the movie were certainly as unsatisfying as those to be found any Hollywood blockbuster. The best things about the movie are the cinematography and design - which isn’t enough to carry two hours worth of cinema. The originals are so much better. 10:20 PM >>> 0 comments
